Tree Planting
Tree and shrub planting started in the Autumn of 2020 to create a productive and wildlife-rich sustainable woodland on six acres of overgrazed pasture on the farm’s steep south facing slopes.
Water management and conservation is vital for all of the projects at the farm, so we have begun putting swales into the hillside. These long surface troughs cut in the hillside and under planted with native willow are designed to absorb water in the wettest seasons. The swales will also redirect water to two new storage ponds that will ensure plenty of water is available for plants and wildlife in the driest seasons. We have installed a duck house, pond, and enclosure as well as deer fencing to protect the perimeter.
Work to plant the top slopes started in 2012 and this year the Woodland Trust and OVO Energy have provided over one thousand native woodland trees to plant across the lower slopes.
The overall aim of this project is to create an organic, sustainable woodland and forest garden that will produce fruit, vegetables, nuts, herbs and seeds, while combatting climate change.

To fuel a log burner in 7 – 10 years or provide supplies for creative willow weaving and carving.
